  15. Welcome to the first English-Vietnamese Dictionary software
  16. available today that runs on a PC-Windows based machine!

  25. 1. WHAT IS IN THIS VERSION?

  27. This version is a limited 1.0b beta release of the Dictionary.
  28. The functionality of the software is fully featured with exception to the 
  29. "Add" feature and the on-line help.  Also, the vocabularies contains only a 
  30. limited version of the dictionary (only letters from a through e).

  33. 2. INSTALLING THE DICTIONARY
  34.  
  35. Unzip the file diction.zip by running 
  36.  
  37. pkunzip -d diction.zip
  38.  
  39. The following file and directories are generated:
  40.  
  41. readme.txt
  42. disk1
  43. disk2
  44.  
  45. copy all the files from disk1 directory into a floppy disk and label it disk1
  46. copy all the files from disk2 directory into a floppy disk and label it disk2
  47.  
  48. Run windows and run setup.exe from disk 1.
  49. Answer questions from the installation program which will guide 
  50. you through the installation procedure.
  51.  
  52. You may required by the installation program that you must add the line
  53. SHARE.EXE /L:500 
  54. to your AUTOEXEC.BAT and restart your computer before running the Dictionary
  55.  
  56. The installation also added the line
  57. Sans Serif VISCII 1.1 (VGA, C.T.Nguyen)=TCVSS11.FON
  58. to your win.ini file under the [font] section
  59. if your system does not have it yet.
  60.  
  61. Depending on your machine configuration, you should have 
  62. at least 4 megs of hard disk space.
  63.  
  64. Due to the requirements of the SimTel archive, the file VBRUN300.DLL has
  65. been left out of this package.  Please check your \WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory 
  66. to see if you already have this file.  You need it to run this dictionary.
  67. If you don't already have it, you can obtain it from many software archives, 
  68. probably including where you got this program.  In the SimTel archive and 
  69. its mirrors, this file can be found as vbrun300.zip in the windows3 directory.

  71. 3. FEATURES OF THE DICTIONARY
  72.  
  73. o Full word to definition lookup with examples.
  74.  
  75. o Can run in the background and use it within any application.
  76.   Just iconize the dictionary, then within your application, say 
  77.   MS Words, just double-clicked on the word and the dictionary will 
  78.   pop up with the Vietnamese definition.
  79.  
  80. o User may delete and modify the vocabularies to dictionary database.  
  81.   (The release version will allow user to add new vocabularies to the dictionary database)
  82.  
  83. o User may create and open other dictionaries either from user created 
  84.   dictionary or dictionaries provided by Bold Technology.  
  85.   (Please see the later portion of this readme file for future dictionaries release)

  87. o Hypertext lookup.
  88.   While reading the definition, user may double-clicked on another English
  89.   word and the dictionary will automatically lookup that word while 
  90.   saving the present word you were reading in a list for later reference. 
  91.  
  92. o Wild card lookup - Pattern Matching and Regular Expressions
  93.   The special characters and the way they are used is described below. 
  94.  
  95. *       Character wildcard.  Matches zero or more characters.  Must 
  96.     be enclosed in [ ] to match itself.  For example, a*a 
  97.     matches aa, a3a, aBa, and aBBBa.
  98.  
  99. ?       Character wildcard.  Matches any one character. Must be 
  100.     enclosed in [ ] to match itself.  For example, a?a matches 
  101.     aaa, a3a, and aBA, but not aBBBa.
  102.  
  103. #       Numeric wildcard.  Matches any one character from 0 through 9.
  104.     Must be enclosed in [] to match itself.  For example, a#a matches 
  105.     a0a, a1a, a2a, but not aaa or a10a.
  106.  
  107. [class ]Character class.  Matches any one character in the class.
  108.     You can specify ranges by separating starting and ending 
  109.     characters with a hyphen.  For example, [a-z,0-9] matches 
  110.     any alphanumeric character.  Because the pattern matching is not 
  111.     case-sensitive, a-z works for both lowercase and uppercase letters.
  112.  
  113.     A class can contain multiple clauses, each separated by a comma.  
  114.     Each clause can consist of a single character or a range of 
  115.     characters.  For example, [D-Z,0-9] matches any letters and 
  116.     numbers but A, B, and C.
  117.  
  118. [!class]Not character class.  Matches any character not specified in the 
  119.     class.  For example, [!a-z] matches anything but letters; [!0-9] 
  120.     matches anything but numbers.  You can use the exclamation point (!) 
  121.     only in the first character position of a class specification.  
  122.     Other rules are the same as those in the character class.

  124. o Definition lookup
  125.   It is possible to lookup words by providing the definition.
  126.   For example: you may provide the word "xe" and the dictionary will 
  127.   return "car" - thus, in essence you have a Vietnamese-English dictionary, 
  128.   but the procedure is slow ... Ofcourse you may combine wild-card lookup in 
  129.   this mode as well.  Note: If you have VNKey from Trichlor, it is 
  130.   possible to type Vietnamese characters.  VNKey and VietVu are among the best 
  131.   Vietnamese keyboard input in the market today, and they are free! 
  132.   There are other excellent commercial Vietnamese keyboard available as 
  133.   well, but be aware that it must conform to VIET-STD VISCII/VIQR COMPLIANT 
  134.   in order to work with the Dictionary software.
  135.   Please contact Trichlor for the latest version.  Bold Technology will provide 
  136.   VNKey software free of charge with the release version.

  138. o On-line help is not available with this limited edition.

  141. 4. FUTURE DATABASE DICTIONARIES 
  142.  
  143. o  Bold Technology will provide the following dictionaries in the near future.

  149.    - Electronic
  150.    - Physics

  156. o  Note a unique feature of the dictionary is to allow user to add new 
  157.    vocabularies to the database.  (This feature is available in the release 
  158.    version).  Utilizing this feature, user may contribute his vocabularies 
  159.    to Bold Technology and receive discounts to future dictionaries!

  161. o  Future version of the software will provide the following features:
  162.    
  163.    - Speech capability both in English and Vietnamese
  164.    - Quick reference to the names of the countries
  165.    - Automatic spelling check as you type from within your applications.
  166.    - Document translations. (You provide the document in one language, 
  167.      Dictionary will translate your entire document into another language.
